As a teenager in the 1970s, growing up in Laguna Beach, California meant learning how to skimboard. Three skimboard manufacturers are doing quite well in this market. As the sport becomes more popular around the world, these companies are having fun trying to meet the need to produce new and improved skimboards.
Victoria Skimboards started business in 1976. The owners, Peter Prietto and Tex Haines, were two of those teenagers who grew up in Laguna Beach who loved skimboarding. As one of the most ingenious and genuine companies in the world, they have ruled this market for the past thirty years. They invented the idea of the rocker and the first foam boards. Their team of skimboard riders keeps them focused on progressively refining the shapes of the boards and producing quality boards.
In 1983, Bob Smetts built his first ZAP skimboard in Venice, Florida. He owned a surfboard and sailboard building company selling them under the ‘Windflight’ and ‘Smetts’ labels. He was looking for a way to supplement his income when he created ZAP. The business became very popular so he no longer makes the surfboards and sailboards.
ZAP went global in the early 1990s. Bob grew up as a skimboarder also, so he has an understanding of what the public is looking for in a quality skimboard. The company has come to understand what defines a real performance board and the details involved in creating them
