What are some good cheap fuel economy cars?

Hello…. I am looking for a good cheap car with high MPG.

For example, the 1995 honda civic gets 40-50mpg and is only about $2500.

Do you think you could give me some ideas of cars that are:
     1) Under $4000
      2) Over 40 mpg

Thanks!

2003 citroen c2, 1.4 hdi diesel getting 70mpg quite nippy, easy to park and here in the uk only 35quid to take. expect to pay 3000 for an 03 with 60K

What about the older Honda Insights? They’re hybrids, and they do go pretty far back in age.

good luck finding a 40 mpg car for less than $4000. honda and mazdas are pretty good on gas. high 20′s low 30′s, but your goin to have to go back a couple of years to get them under $4000. the cheapest hybrid runs about $20,000 and thats used. 2000 Honda Insight is the cheapest one and it gets about 53 mpg.

I have mazda protege and it has been a great car. The honda civic, Hyundai elantra, toyota corrolla, and the nissan sentra are all good cars.
