I’m thinking of buying an R reg Escort 2nd hand, and I’d like it if I could get 3 years out of it with as little trouble as possible. Its done 100K+, and the asking price is just over £1000. Does this seem like a good investment?

The asking price is just that, what they’ve asked in turn, ask well below the asking price and you should get it below £1000.
The only thing about Escort’s is that they seem to pick up a lot of dust on the arches of the wheel’s.

No car is a good investment. However, as long as the Escort has a full service history and is from a reliable source then you can generally expect a good runner to last a few years. For £1000 though it should be in A1 condition throughout and faultless, if not haggle down on each fault/dent/scratch you see and make sure it does not show any blue smoke from the exhaust when changing gear.

In Manchester Area you would be looking to pay no more than £400 for an Escort with 100k+miles on it.
£1000 will get you quite a lot of car round here…..2nd hand market is very quiet.
Have a look in auto-trader each week…I’m sure you’ll find something a lot better than what you’re looking at.

my first car was a mark 1 escort 2 door 1974 model. it was the best but they are getting a bit old now.
