When buying second hand deisel car what would be the pitfalls to look for please..that is apart?

the usual pitfalls of buying a second hand car. Does a second hand deisel develop faults that petrol cars don’t.

Seemingly silly question…well maybe that’s why I’m looking to you guys for some tips.

Thank you!
Thanks addads….never noticed typ..o.
even andads!!
Towing caravan hence the need for a diesel.

Generally there are few drawbacks to diesel engines (apart from spelling it wrong), they tend to be able to cover higher mileages than the equivalent petrol engine. they definitely use less fuel, although this is marginal on long journeys.Turbo diesels are more prone to breakdowns if driven badly and need more servicing generally.
The whole argument for and against is based around costs, if you do low mileages ,i.e. less than around 5000 per year, the benefits are few because the increased service costs outweigh the savings in fuel.

  1. jed slade says:

CHECK THE SMOKE FROM THE EXHAUST,BLUE OR BLACK.A lot of blue is not good,a lot of black may mean the fuel pump needs regulating.check for leaks round, the injectors and fuel return pipes, check the fuel filters and water trap.check the battery is the correct type, they are heavier duty for diesels, also the tyres may be different than the petrol version because of the weight difference, not always though.Apart from this ,it,s the same as a petrol.Make sure the easy start system plugs all work.
